Segments and static lists

On the interface Accengage it is possible to manage two types of segments ,the dynamic segments and the static lists .


A segment is a cluster of app users grouped together by criteria, allowing you to apply precise marketing actions to them. Each message is sent to one or more segments. Your targets must be organised so that the segments are created before a message is created. The same contact may be included in one or more segment but remains unique in the database.

Creating a segment

  • Click on the menu Targeting > Segments.
  • To create a new segment, click on the button "add new segment"

  • You can create your segment by defining whether it is a test segment or a specific segment for sending a targeted marketing action.

  • Set criteria which allow you to filter the target, launch a search and then add criteria to the segment.

  • You can either add criteria directly to the segment (which creates a new line), or make a counter. When the line is created, a counter shows you the number of profiles targeted for all the criteria entered.
  • Once you are happy with the counter, you need to Confirm the segment (green button), otherwise the segment and the criteria will not be saved.
  • You can modify the segment's criteria by using the edit option on a criteria line. The line being edited turns grey and the criteria then become editable. Do not forget to Modify criteria before Reconfirming the segment.

Segmentation criteria

Accengage allows you to create segments :

  • based on behavioral data

After sending a push message, you can identify and target mobile users who: received, didn't receive, reacted, or didn't react

  • The « Reacted » operator comprises users who received and clicked on the main message.
  • The « Didn’t react » operator comprises users who received but did not click on the main message.

To be more precise in your targeting, you can associate the criterion "data recency" which allows to have precise data on a time scale (day, date, or period).

  • based on geo-location data

It is possible to import several localisation points for each segment and to limit your geo-location according to the date on which the information was last updated.

To target an event, the event must be defined in the advanced settings for the information to be collected in the Accengage database. Criteria for targeting events are set using this form :

The fields to be filled in will differ depending on the type of event selected (Purchase, Lead, Cart). Do not forget to click on “Add criteria to the segment” once the fields have been completed.

Once the type of event is selected, you have to select a count : « did exactly (=) »  ; « did more than (>) »  ; « did less than (<) »  ; « did a minimum of (≥) »  ;  « did a maximum of (≤) »  ; « did not ».

You can add an event criterion to a personalized event to accurate your targeting.

Each event criterion has an operator : « contains » ; « doesn’t contain » ; « equals » ; « different from » ; « includes » ; « does not include »

For a better accuracy of your targeting, you can associate a “data recency” allowing you to limit the scope on a time period, either in terms of a date or duration (days, hours or minutes)

In the case below, the targeting is done only for users who have booked a train from Gare du nord’s station to Compiègne’s station on the following period : 12/13/2017 to 12/15/2017

To be used, the event criterion must be created in the settings: Menu « Settings » > « Settings » > « Events »

In that part, you can create a new event by using the button  or modify an event already existing using the button 

For the custom events, once the code and the label are defined, click on  (next to custom field)

Define the priority, in the case of several events of the same type have been realized by the user.

Fill the form displayed once you clicked on 

Indicate the name of the custom field and the matching key that will allow Accengage to know which value of your application is associated to the custom field.

Define the type of the field : « Text » ; « Numeric  » or « Date  »

Can target a field date relative to the current date . So you can for example, celebrate the anniversary of your mobile users.

In the case above, the date of birth is compared to the month and day of today to celebrate the birthday. If we are on January 1, the segment will take into account all the people who have the day and month birth equal to those of today , so on January 1. 

Therefore, on January 2, the segment s recalculated and retrieves new mobile users match the 2 January.

You can choose different targeting criteria with the current date : day, day / month , day / month / year, month ...

Combining criteria

Accengage allows you to create combinations of segmentation criteria linked by AND/OR operators

"AND" function

To combine two search criteria when defining your segment, you just need to click on the “Add search criteria” button to link together the various options to be set.

"OR" function

To define a segment made up of two possible and non-exclusive criteria, you should first confirm the criteria by clicking on “Add criteria to the segment” before adding new ones.

Excluding criteria

Accengage allows you to exclude segmentation criteria.

  • Click on Add criterion
  • Select the criteria which you wish to exclude (the App User ID in the example below) and then select the “not equal” option from the drop-down list. You can then enter the value that you wish to exclude into the text field.
  • Then click on Add to the segment

Excluding a static segment

To extract a general segment, you must first fill in the segmentation criteria before adding exclusion criteria. You then need to add your exclusion criteria.

  • Click on Add an exclude criterion
  • Select the segment that you wish to exclude.

  • Click on Add the exclusion
  • And Confirm the segment

On the interface you also have a direct entry via the Targeting menu to search within your base. The search results can be added to a segment or exported in CSV forma

Static Lists

Unlike a dynamic segment whose volume can evolve according to the criteria defined in the interface, a static list is a set of mobile users whose volume is “static” at a time, in order to be generally used during a specific campaign or as an exclusion of mobile user’s target.

From the SDK iOS 5.4, SDK Android 3.3 and up, you can create an empty static lists/or import a file of several empty lists, which will be populated initially only through the SDK and can be used as sending segment for your push campaigns.

To do this, follow the steps below

  • Go to the menu Targeting > Segments / Lists
  • Click on the tab “Static Lists”
  • To add a new list, click the button " Create a list”
  • Fill the fields that appear below : external ID , Name and then click on Validate

You also have the option to import a file of several empty lists for your convenience.

For that, just click on the button "Import Lists"

Then on the push message form, you can set a message using as a target, a static list. For that, simply select the list you want in the drop down menu of sending segments (please, note that the static lists don’t appear in the the test segments).
